Tia Clayton’s Claims First Diamond League Victory

Three Jamaicans claimed victory at the 2024 Silesia Diamond League on Sunday.

Jamaican rising star Tia Clayton claimed her first Diamond League victory in the Women’s 100m at the 2024 Silesia Diamond League on Sunday (August 25). The 20-year-old clocked a lifetime best of 10.83s (+2.9) to edge out Marie-Josée Ta Lou-Smith of Côte d’Ivoire in a dramatic photo finish. Both Clayton and Ta Lou-Smith crossed the line in 10.83s separated by just one-thousandth of a second. Tamar Davis of the US finished third  in 10.84s

For Clayton, this win comes on the heels of her Olympic debut where she competed in the women’s 100m finals and 4x100m relay. This is her first Diamond League win and only her second time competing on the circuit.  

Other first-time winners at the 2024 Silesia Diamond League are Jamaica’s national record holder and national champion, Ackera Nugent and Shanieka Ricketts. Nugent powered to a meet record in the women’s 100m Hurdles with an impressive 12.29s (-0.5) on what looked to be an injured leg. She finished ahead of Grace Stark of the US who clocked 12.37s and two-time World Athletics Championships gold medallist, Danielle Williams of Jamaica who ran 12.38 seconds. The meet record was previously held by, Tobi Amusan of Nigeria who won in 2023 and Jasmine Camacho-Quinn of Puerto Rico who won in 2022.

Olympic silver medalist, Shanieka Ricketts claimed victory in the Women’s Triple Jump with an impressive leap of 14.50m. Ackelia Smith, also of Jamaica finished fifth with 13.78m (1.2m/s).

Other Standout Performances by Jamaicans

Other standout performances by Jamaicans include Rasheed Broadbell who finished second in the men’s 110m Hurdles, with a season’s best 13.05 seconds (1.1m/s). Romaine Beckford finished second in the Men’s High Jump with a personal best of 2.29m. National Champion, Rushell Clayton was third in the Women’s 400m Hurdles, clocking 53.11s ahead of Shiann Salmon who finished fourth with 53.15s, Janieve Russell who finished fifth in 53.59s and Andrenette Knight who finished sixth with a season’s best of 53.68s. 

Ackeem Blake finished third in the Men’s 100m equalling his lifetime best of 9.89s. Former national champion, Rohan Watson finished seventh with 10.18 seconds. Olympic silver medalist, Kishane Thompson was expected to be in the race but registered a DNS (Did not start). Roashawn Clarke finished fourth in the Men’s 400m Hurdles clocking 47.74s while Jaheel Hyde finished ninth in 50.57s. After starting with two fouls, Olympic bronze medalist, Rajindra Campbell finished eighth in the Men’s Shot Put with a best of 20.78m. 

The next Diamond League meet is scheduled for August 30, 2024 in Rome.
