Shericka Jackson Withdraws from 200m at 2024 Paris Olympics

Shericka Jackson withdraws

In a surprising turn of events, national 100 and 200m champion Shericka Jackson has withdrawn from the women’s 200m competition at the Paris Olympics. Jackson, the defending world champion and the second-fastest woman of all time in the 200m, had already pulled out of the 100m race. Neither Jackson nor her team has officially confirmed the reason for her withdrawal from the 200m.

Jackson was widely considered the favourite to win the 200m event, making her exit a significant disappointment for her fans and supporters. With Jackson out of the competition, fellow Jamaicans Lanae-Tava Thomas and Niesha Burgher now carry the nation’s hopes for a medal in the 200m. Both athletes qualified for the semi-finals, with Thomas clocking 22.70 seconds and Burgher 22.54 seconds.

Jackson’s exit deals yet another blow to the Jamaican women’s track team, a perennial Olympic powerhouse that had captured 15 of the 24 Olympic medals in the 100m and 200m events between 2004 and 2021. The absence of a powerhouse like Shericka Jackson will undoubtedly be felt, but the remaining competitors are determined to uphold Jamaica’s strong track and field legacy.

Stay tuned for more updates on the Paris Olympics and the performances of the Jamaican athletes.
