Jamaica’s Prime Minister Andrew Holness has been awarded an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters by Delaware State University in the United States. This prestigious honor was conferred during a ceremony on Friday, May 10, marking a historic moment as Holness became the first Head of Government to receive such recognition from the university.

The event was notable not only for the conferral of the degree but also because Prime Minister Holness delivered the commencement address, a first in the institution’s 132-year history. Speaking to an audience of approximately 200 doctoral and master’s graduates, Holness highlighted the importance of adopting new perspectives to turn challenges into opportunities.

In his speech, Holness stressed the value of continuous learning and openness to new ideas, which he described as crucial for both personal and professional development. He urged the graduates to embrace diverse viewpoints and to learn from the experiences of others to foster growth and innovation.

The ceremony saw the attendance of distinguished figures such as Jamaica’s Ambassador to the United States, Audrey Marks, and Robert Montague, Member of Parliament for St. Mary West.
