The 2024 Jamaican Track and Field Olympic Trials are set to take place at the National Stadium in Kingston from June 27-30, with athletes vying for spots at the Paris 2024 Games. This year’s trials promise thrilling action as Olympic champions Shericka Jackson, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, and Omar McLeod lead the charge.

Star Athletes and Key Events

Among the headline events, the women’s 100m race is highly anticipated. Shericka Jackson and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce are expected to secure their places for the Olympics. Jackson, a two-time 200m world champion, is aiming for her third consecutive national sprints double, having dethroned Fraser-Pryce in 2022.

Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, the triple Olympic gold medallist, will lace up for what could be her last National Championships. After opening her season with an 11.15-second dash at a local meeting in Kingston, she’s poised for another strong performance.

Elaine Thompson-Herah, recovering from an injury at the NYC Grand Prix, aims to make the Jamaican short sprint team but will not defend her 200m title in Paris. Instead, Jackson and Fraser-Pryce will compete in both the 100m and 200m events.

Emerging talents like U20 100m world gold medallist Briana Williams, Alana Reid, and twins Tia and Tina Clayton add to the depth of talent in the women’s sprints.

Men’s Sprints and Top Contenders

The men’s 100m dash is set to be a spectacle, with Oblique Seville leading the entry list. Seville, currently Jamaica’s fastest man over 100m, aims to secure his Olympic ticket after a blazing 9.82 victory at the Racers Grand Prix in May 2024.

Other notable contenders include last year’s champion Rohan Watson, experienced sprinter Julian Forte, and Yohan Blake, aiming for his fourth Olympic appearance. Blake shared, “This one is special. It’s my last… I am ready to give my all one final time and savour every moment.”

Middle-Distance and Relays

Antonio Watson, the 400m world gold medal winner and Jamaican sportsman of the year in 2023, is expected to shine. Watson aims to meet his potential in Paris and will also be part of the team’s final attempt to secure a place in the 4x400m relay.

Field Events

The trials will also showcase top talents in the throws and jumps. In the men’s triple jump, Jaydon Hibbert is targeting his first senior medal. Shanieka Ricketts is tipped to retain her national triple jump title. Jamaican shot put record holders Danniel Thomas-Dodd and Rajindra Campbell are also expected to add more national titles to their names.

With a mix of seasoned champions and emerging stars, the 2024 Jamaican Track and Field Olympic Trials promise to be an exciting and competitive event, setting the stage for the nation’s track and field athletes as they aim for glory at the Paris 2024 Games.
