Ministry Of Agriculture Encourages Jamaicans to Rear Goats

Goat farming in Jamaica

The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Mining is urging local farmers to engage more actively in goat rearing to meet Jamaica’s growing demand for goat meat. Portfolio Minister, Hon. Floyd Green, emphasizes the significance of supporting the small ruminant sector, as approximately 80% of curried goat consumed in the country is imported.

Initiatives to Boost Goat Farming in Jamaica

To enhance goat farming in Jamaica, the government has implemented several initiatives. These include removing GCT and duty costs for importing goats, thereby facilitating the strengthening of breeding stock. Additionally, artificial insemination programs have been initiated to drive significant expansion in goat herds across the island.

In addition to promoting goat farming, the Ministry is prioritizing the cultivation of specific crops such as sweet potatoes, yams, breadfruit, ackee, and mangoes. This strategic focus aims to bolster food security in Jamaica while also facilitating export expansion.
