Jamaica Edges Closer to 2026 World Cup Return After Playoff Win

Jamaica moved within one victory of ending a 28-year World Cup drought after defeating New Caledonia 1-0 in the FIFA 2026 inter-confederation playoff semi-final. Bailey Cadamarteri, the young Wrexham striker, scored the only goal in the 18th minute at Estadio Akron in Guadalajara, Mexico.

Current Standing in 2026 Qualifiers

Jamaica now faces DR Congo in the playoff final on March 31, 2026. A win would send the Reggae Boyz to Group K alongside Portugal, Uzbekistan, and Colombia. It would mark Jamaica’s first World Cup appearance since their debut in 1998.

The team reached this stage by finishing second in CONCACAF final-round Group B. They collected 11 points from six matches (three wins, two draws, one loss, +8 goal difference). Curaçao topped the group with 12 points and took the automatic spot. Jamaica advanced as one of the two best runners-up, alongside Suriname.

The campaign began with strong form in the earlier rounds. Jamaica showed solid defense and attacking threat while picking up key victories. However, a 0-0 draw against Curaçao at the National Stadium in the final group game handed the direct qualification to their opponents. The result left many fans disappointed, as the squad had looked capable of finishing first.

One Match From History

Jamaica last appeared at the World Cup in France in 1998. Since then, the nation has waited through several near misses. Now, one decisive game against DR Congo stands between the Reggae Boyz and a return to the global stage.
