Jamaica’s Reggae Boyz suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat against Mexico in their opening Copa America Group B match at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas, on Saturday.

After a sluggish start, the Reggae Boyz found their rhythm in the first half, creating several promising scoring opportunities. The best chance came from a deflected shot by Antonio, which was expertly saved by Mexican goalkeeper Julio Gonzales.

Jamaican goalkeeper Jamali Waite was tested multiple times but showcased his skills by making crucial saves. He made a diving save early in the match, cleared a high ball at the edge of his penalty area, and stopped another attempt just before halftime.

The Reggae Boyz increased their intensity in the second half and matched Mexico’s pace. Mexico was forced to substitute their captain and center-back Edson Alvarez due to a thigh injury sustained midway through the first half.

The decisive moment came in the 69th minute when Mexican left wingback Gerardo Arteaga scored the winning goal. Jamaica had an opportunity to score their first-ever goal in the tournament when Michail Antonio found the back of the net, but the goal was declared offside.

Dexter Lembikisa nearly secured a point for Jamaica late in the game, but his shot was narrowly saved by Gonzales, preserving Mexico’s lead.
