Jamaica Labour Party Declared Winner of Local Government Election
The Electoral Commission of Jamaica (ECJ) issued a statement on Saturday evening, affirming that the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) won the recent local government election after securing control of 7 local authorities across various parishes. The statement came on the heels
Meanwhile, the People’s National Party (PNP) emerged victorious in 5 parishes. Notably, the contest in Kingston and St. Andrew (KSAMC) ended in a tie, with each party securing 20 divisions each. However, the PNP claimed victory by winning the popular vote in the Kingston & St. Andrew Municipal Corporation (KSAMC), giving the right to appoint the Mayor of Kingston. As per the Eighth Schedule of the Representation of the People Act, the Jamaica Labour Party will designate the Deputy Mayor.
Additionally, the PNP retained the Mayorship of the Municipality of Portmore. The final count also showed the PNP winning the popular vote nationwide and capturing two more divisions than the JLP across all municipalities.

The meeting to select the new Mayor for KSAMC is scheduled for Thursday, March 7, 2024, at noon, where the Principal Returning Officer will oversee the selection process for the Mayor and Deputy Mayor nominees.
