The 2024 Paris Olympics are officially underway, marked by a groundbreaking and controversial opening ceremony that has captured global attention. For the first time in Olympic history, the ceremony took place outside the main stadium in the rain, with the Seine River and the Eiffel Tower providing a stunning backdrop.

The opening ceremony began on Friday, featuring 7,000 competitors parading down the Seine, passing by the historic monuments of the French capital. This unique format showcased French culture in a spectacular display. The highlight for many was seeing each country’s athletes making their entrance on boats, creating a picturesque and memorable scene.

For Jamaicans, the most anticipated moment came during the parade of athletes. Sharing a boat with the Italians, the Jamaican team was in high spirits. Triple national triple jump title holder Shanika Rickets proudly carried the flag, embodying the nation’s hopes and pride.

A standout moment of the evening was a heartfelt performance by Celine Dion beneath the Eiffel Tower. Returning to the stage after a four-year hiatus due to medical reasons, the Canadian singer closed the festivities with a stirring rendition of Edith Piaf’s “Hymne à l’amour.”

However, the ceremony was not without controversy. A recreation of the famous painting “The Last Supper,” featuring an obese woman as Jesus and queer and trans figures, including a child, as the apostles, drew significant criticism and sparked heated debates online.

As the games progress, the highly anticipated track and field events are set to begin on August 2. Jamaica has a total of 87 Olympic medals, and pundits predict that this year’s team could bring home between 7 to 10 more, further fueling the excitement for what promises to be an unforgettable Olympics.

Stay tuned for more updates as the Paris 2024 Olympics continue to unfold.
